A Beautiful First Year – Celebrating Motherhood and Milestones with Asha & Astraea

Some stories deserve more than a single session.

For photographer Kamee Valdez, documenting Astraea’s first year through her Baby Collective membership meant witnessing not only a baby’s growth, but the transformation of a mother as well. Over the course of twelve months, she photographed countless milestones—from those fleeting newborn days to this final first birthday session—creating a visual legacy of a season that changes a family forever.

There is something especially meaningful about watching a mother and daughter grow together. With each session, Astraea’s personality blossomed a little more, while Asha stepped more fully into motherhood with grace, confidence, and love.

To mark the occasion, the session began with tender mommy-and-me portraits that celebrated their bond. Tiny hands wrapped around fingers, quiet cuddles, soft laughter, and the familiar comfort of being held close created images that feel timeless in their simplicity.

The celebration concluded with an elevated first birthday cake smash, styled with a refined and minimal aesthetic that allowed Astraea’s joy to take center stage. Frosting-covered fingers, delighted giggles, and all the uninhibited wonder that comes with turning one made for the sweetest ending to an unforgettable first year.

More than a birthday session, this was a celebration of growth, transformation, and the beautiful journey of motherhood.

“Time is the most valuable gift we have. Children are only little for such a short season.”

What’s your favorite family pastime together?

Our family loves spending time together playing games, visiting parks, and traveling.

Lately, puzzles have become a favorite activity around our house, and dance parties are always a hit. We’ll turn on music in the living room and dance together until everyone is laughing.

We also love Disney vacations, beach trips, and spending time in St. George whenever we can.

Any lessons you learned as a family through the last year?

We’ve been learning how to navigate change together.

We recently moved away from a neighborhood where we had built wonderful friendships and where kids were constantly running in and out of our backyard. It was a big adjustment for all of us.

The transition has taught us resilience, patience, and the importance of creating home wherever we are.

Tell us a fun or silly story that happened to your family recently!

March has become birthday month in our family.

We celebrated birthdays one right after another and welcomed visitors from out of town throughout the month. Between the parties, celebrations, and family gatherings, it felt like an entire month dedicated to making memories.

It was busy, joyful, and incredibly special.

What does family mean to you?

Family is everything.

Family is home. Family is the people who are always there for you through every season of life.

My family is the most important thing in my world, and I would do absolutely anything for them.

What have you recently done to put family as a major focus in your life?

As a stay-at-home mom, my family is my primary focus every day.

Our children are homeschooled, which allows me to be deeply involved in their education and daily growth. Watching them learn and develop new skills is one of the most rewarding parts of motherhood.

Whether it’s attending sporting events, helping coach, serving as team mom, or simply being present, I try to be involved in every part of their lives.

What are the best things you’ve learned from each other?

We’re constantly learning from one another.

Patience, kindness, sharing, loving others well, and putting others before ourselves are lessons we practice every day as a family.

My children teach me just as much as I teach them, and they continually inspire me to become a better version of myself.

If you had one piece of advice for other families, what would it be?

Time is the most valuable gift we have.

The cleaning can wait. The chores can wait.

Children are only little for such a short season. Say yes to the cuddles, the games, the extra stories before bed, and the moments that seem small but become the memories you’ll cherish most.

Live fully in the moment with your family.
