The Johnson Family at Home – A Story of Presence, Process, and the Beauty of Right Now

There is something quietly powerful about a family that chooses presence over perfection. For the Johnson family, home isn’t defined by finished walls or completed projects – it’s built in the in-between moments, the laughter shared over meals, and the simple joy of being together. Their story is a gentle reminder that the most meaningful seasons of life are often the ones we’re tempted to rush through.

Set within the walls of a home still unfolding, this session captures what matters most – connection. From fishing trips filled with snacks and conversation to evenings spent cooking side by side, Jesse and Paige have created a rhythm rooted in intention. Their daughters, Iris and Poppy, are growing up surrounded by not just a house, but a life filled with love, tradition, and deep familial bonds.

“Time is the most precious thing – don’t wait for perfect to start making memories.”

What’s your favorite family pastime together?

We really love fishing together, it’s so peaceful and allows for such great quality time with enjoying the outdoors and talking with each other. The girls love packing their favorite snacks and drinks or sometimes I’ll put a basket together of our favorite charcuterie items for a lunch or dinner. It has become a special thing we do together as a family that I think we all cherish! We also really love cooking together. It’s not often that we get to all cook together just with daily schedules and work but when we do we really enjoy getting to work together as a team in the kitchen!

Any lessons you learned as a family through the last year?

We moved into our home a little over a year ago that we have been working on for years and still have so much to do; we initially were going to wait until the house was done to move in, but we realized that time is just so sacred and we didn’t want to wait forever for things to be “perfect” and “finished.” You realize time is the most precious thing and we wanted to start making memories with our kids in our forever home before they got even older because to me a home is memories and our kids are central to those sacred moments! You realize kids don’t need everything to be perfect to be special and neither do you. Enjoy the process!

Tell us a fun or silly story that happened to your family recently!

I feel like I’m really blanking right now and cannot think of anything specific, but our kids make us laugh all the time!

What does family mean to you?

Family is such a central part in our life. Not only our immediate family but our extended family. We are so blessed to be extremely close to both sides of our family and we live close so we get to spend a lot of quality time with everybody and share in memories together. We are so grateful to have such amazing family and so much love in our life and for our children to get to experience closeness with all of their family members; their cousins are their best friends!

What have you recently done to put family as a major focus in your life?

Always made them a priority! It’s super important to us to be available and be involved! Again, back to time being precious, you don’t get time back and people are the most important thing in life, so we always try to cherish it and show our love and appreciation by being present as much as we can.

What are the best things you’ve learned from each other?

Oh gosh so much! I don’t know if I could pinpoint one specific thing or even a couple. Jesse and I have been together since high school! We’ve done half of our lives together and I’m so grateful that we’ve always grown together in the same direction and both have just been so encouraged by doing life together and have a beautiful blessed life. We are huge advocates for marriage being the best thing ever when it’s the right person and we got very lucky finding that person early in life. I think constantly challenging each other to be the best versions of ourselves, centering our relationship in God, and putting each other first have been the key parts in allowing us to grow and learn from each other all the time!

If you had one piece of advice for other families, what would it be?

Well I’ll speak from a mother’s perspective! Don’t wish any stages away! Everything is a phase of life that comes and passes and really try to purpose to enjoy each one!
