From meeting in the trauma center of the emergency room … to locking arms together in Italy! Here is Rachel & Clay’s story …
How did you two meet? What were your first impressions of one another?
We met in the Emergency Room! We know, not your usual ‘we locked eyes across the grocery store’ story. But we did lock eyes across from the trauma bay. If you’re wondering why, it’s because we both worked at the same hospital at the time. I noticed Clay would go out of his way to help me anytime I walked past him. We both knew we were attracted to each other but were nervous at the same time until I finally ripped off the bandaid and introduced myself! From the very beginning, he always makes everything so fun and he says that I balance him out. I guess I’m the yin to his yang!
Tell us a funny story relating to your wedding day or relationship!
My late grandmother loved lady bugs, so whenever my family sees one we like to think it is her popping in to say hello. On one of our first dates we went on a hike. It was a beautiful sunny November day in California, and Clay noticed a lady bug had flown into my hair. He didn’t know what that meant to me at the time, but I felt that it was a sign that he was someone special and grandma approves!
Any special ways you incorporated your family or family history into your wedding day?
Both my fiancé and I have Italian roots, however Clay comes from a huge Italian family. I have loved participating in their traditions over the years and we both knew we wanted to incorporate that on our wedding day. Our theme for our wedding is Italian inspired using accents of olive branches, neutral florals, a 1957 Piaggio Ape, and of course the desserts! His Nonni will be hand making her world-famous Cannolis as our desserts for our guests as they are to die for!
What part of your wedding day was/is most important to you?
We both agree and it comes to a tie – our handwritten vows and the reception! We ultimately want to look back on this special day and remember us having the time of our lives celebrating with our loved ones. It is so easy to become overwhelmed and lost in the details, that we can lose sight of what this day is truly about, our love for each other.
What is the best thing you’ve learned from one another?
To be patient and to be a good listener.
If you had one piece of advice for other couples, what would it be?
To never stop dating each other! Never underestimate the power of a love note on the fridge or a favorite home cooked meal. Clay never forgets to give me a hug and to say ‘I love you’ before he heads out the door. It’s the little things that matter.
What is the most honest thing you can say about love?
Love takes work and it is not always perfect. Through all of life’s challenges, you have to remember to be a true partner in your relationship. It is essential to support and be honest with each other and to remember that you are a team always.
