It’s always a treat when we see something come through from Justine Wright, and we loved this sweet and simple engagement session she sent us recently. Lauren and Matt wandered around with her on the campus of the University of Missouri on a crisp March morning, also including their sweet pup for some fun photos! We love all the beautiful moments she captured with them, and want to share their story with you, our readers …
How did you two meet? What were your first impressions of one another?
We met at work, a mortgage company based in mid-Missouri called Veterans United Home Loans. Matt and I work in very different departments (he works in Product Strategy and I work in Human Resources) but our worlds collided when I was tasked to hire in a few new people for Matt’s team. I think it’s probably safe to say that we both took interest in one another after meeting a few more times and quickly realized we wanted to get to know each other more. There were quite a few early morning coffee shop dates before work, then our first ‘real’ dinner date, and the rest is history!
Tell us a funny story relating to your wedding day or relationship!
Matt isn’t exactly the most adventurous eater whereas I will try anything on the menu at least once. It was pretty easy for me to realize this about him after our first few dinner dates, because the facial expressions he would make when the waiter would bring over a plate of fried oysters, or a gnocchi dish, or a beet salad – pretty much anything other than a burger and fries – were PRICELESS. He’s definitely ventured out more food-wise in the last year or so, but his ‘surprised’ or ‘in-awe’ reactions to what I order always give me a good laugh when we’re out to dinner 🙂
What is your favorite thing about each other?
Our favorite thing about each other is probably that we both bring such different perspectives to the table, which can be challenging at times, but how much we’re able to teach each other because of that far outweighs any of the challenges that we may experience. Just the other day we ended up going to each other for advice on very different and unrelated topics, but by the end of our conversation we both looked at each other and shared just how cool it is to be constantly teaching and helping one another grow. When you’re able to be vulnerable in conversations like that and open your heart and your mind to the perspective and wisdom of the person that you love, it really is a beautiful thing.
What was your favorite part about planning your wedding?
(This answer could also work for the question about what’s most important to us for our wedding day) \\ This is an easy one – the overwhelming joy at the thought of having all of our favorite people that we love more than anything in this works in the same place has definitely fueled our wedding planning process. Luckily we both work really hard at staying focused on what really matters on that day, and try to let the stress surrounding all of the little things and little details go. We truly cannot wait for our wedding day and the opportunity to see all of our family and friends that we love so dearly together!
If you had one piece of advice for other couples, what would it be?
I think we’re probably still rookies at this compared to others’ advice that is likely much wiser than ours (haha) so please take this with a very humble grain of salt! The pillars of our relationship that have truly strengthened us as a team have been communication (the holy grail), respect, and trust. Figure out what your pillars are and what matters the most to both of you, then allow those pillars to hold you accountable in all conversations (and arguments) and be the driving force for how you support one another in your relationship.
