Love is a dance between complexities and complete effortlessness. We are often harangued in extremes, where love is an unachievable fairytale or else a constant battlefield, but the truth lies somewhere in the beautiful grey. Relationships aren’t always easy, they bring together two imperfect people and ask them to become a single whole, and it takes sacrifice to reconcile the gaps. They are hard-fought battles defined by absolute surrender, with each campaign an exercise in selflessness—and yet the love part is easy.
Loving someone—loving someone—is never difficult. It’s like breathing. You don’t have to think about it, you just do, and each particle of your being urges you to keep going. Each breath gives way to the next in a constant rhythm, each drop of affection alludes to the ocean; it’s sweetly addicting. It makes the sacrifice less the sacrifice and more the act of devotion, and suddenly the forfeit is simple. Suddenly, those pieces of ourselves are never asked for, never demanded of, but freely and beautifully and faithfully given. Suddenly your human mess meets another’s and they meet in perfectly flawed incandescence, and that is the easiest difficult thing you’ll ever do.
