What makes a picture? Well, the subject for sure, but the environment or background also speaks quite strongly to the overall impression that an image makes. Today we’re talking about the art in photographs – not just in the foreground, but the background.
from the photographer: “Jessica of JRD Art Shop is an artist who specializes in Fine Art backdrops for photographers all over the world. Her work has been featured by icons such as Darcy Benincosa and stylists like Jade Magnolia to name a few.
I found Jessicas work on Instagram a few years back when I first started dabbling in weddings, her backdrops spoke to me and I loved the elegance they brought to a flat lay. I’ve since grown my collection and bring them with me to every wedding I shoot.
I noticed that Jessica had had many photoshoots taken in the past by other wonderful photographers but what stood out the most to me was that she was never truly the center of those images. I came to Jessica with this idea, to not only document her work, but to document her like others have documented their models or their beautiful paper goods… she would be our flat lay. Front and center, in an elegant gown, surrounded by her work and in her mothers garden where she finds most of her inspiration. And as she is a mother of 2, we included her sweet kiddos in some of the shots because they are a huge part of her story.
Jessica is a light and her personality shines through in her work.
I asked Jessica how she found herself in the Fine Art world painting backdrops for other creatives and she responded “I discovered this new form of expression where color and texture say everything you want it to say. I chose a palette knife over a brush and it became my best friend. “
