A Zurich Elopement Story

Marina & Michelle had a civil wedding in Zurich, Switzerland. The charming location was the perfect backdrop for their love story. They opted to take some simple photos around the town to celebrate their love!

How did you two meet? What were your first impressions of one another?

We met at work! None of us lived in Zurich, but years ago, our company brought us to Zurich for a month of training. Initially, we did not have much of an impression of one another; we were just close friends. But as time passed, we realised we always kept in contact and cared about each. Two years later, when both of us were by chance relocated to Zurich for work, we decided to give it a try – and the rest, you can guess…

Tell us a funny story relating to your wedding day or relationship!

Even though we planned ahead, we only got the confirmation from the local authority that our civil wedding was happening a couple of hours before the expected ceremony! So we had to call our witnesses and take them out of work that afternoon to get us married. It was impromptu but beautiful and fun!

Describe a hurdle you had to overcome in your relationship or during your wedding planning.

We are from different countries (very far apart, Brazil and Italy), so being divided between two continents is always a struggle, having to split time with families, friends, and places we love.

Any special ways you incorporated your family or family history into your wedding day?

Since none of our families are in Switzerland, we decided to do the civil wedding with just the two of us and our witnesses. We thought that would be the “most fair” approach since coming to Switzerland from Brazil would’ve been a much more considerable effort than coming to Zurich from the north of Italy. Then, we arranged a celebration in both of our countries on a date later on.

What part of your wedding day was/is most important to you?

Try to enjoy that day in total. Notice the weather, the people on the streets, and the surrounding. This will build memories of what actually happened on that day. Our civil wedding took place in a room in the Zurich Stadthaus with Limmat river views. The image of the sun reflecting on the water and the quietness outside will stick in my memory forever.

What is the best thing you’ve learned from one another?

We’ve learned that opening up and listening to one another without judgement is essential in a relationship, making it healthy and long-lasting. Hiding emotions, thoughts, and ideas create hidden barriers between two people that shouldn’t exist in a couple. You should bond as one.

What is your favorite thing about each other?

How we go through problems and stricter times with a good spirit. We try to face problems, knowing that being on this together makes everything easier and simpler – and that way, we become even more optimistic about life.

What was your favorite part about planning your wedding?

We truly enjoyed buying the wedding bands. The idea that we would wear this ring every day from that date on gave us the actual sensation that something was changing in our lives – even more than signing our wedding certificate.

If you had one piece of advice for other couples, what would it be?

Don’t stress out too much about sticking to the plan. Things will almost always deviate from the original script. And if you’re too attached to what was planned, you will think that something “went wrong”. Whereas if you focus on celebrating love with your loved ones, any deviation from plans will just be considered part of that beautiful day.

What is the most honest thing you can say about love?

It is all about decisions. If you love someone, but you don’t decide that you want to be with this person, that you will make an effort to be with this person, you will create a life together and build something, this love will just be a sublime feeling that happened in your life. But love paired with decision-making – that creates a love relationship.
