Kerry & Spencer had a sweet wedding at The Providence Public Library – a stately building filled with rich details and unique features. We are loving the fun vibe they had going and how joyful they were throughout this day with each other! And that first look reaction is priceless! We caught up with them for a few questions about their day …
How did you two meet?
When we both arrived at Brown University for orientation freshman year, we each came with one friend: Spencer with James (his best man), and Kerry with Greg (who officiated the wedding). James and Greg were teammates, meaning Kerry quickly met James, who soon thereafter introduced her to Spencer. Kerry remembers the moment vividly, Spencer does not.
What is your proposal story?
We were actually visiting Providence to look at the Providence Public Library as a potential wedding venue and decided to take a walk around campus after the tour. Spencer proposed at the exact spot where we met – under the arch connecting our two freshmen dorms. Even though we had just looked at a wedding venue, it was a complete surprise!
Tell us a little about your wedding vision!
We have both lived in Massachusetts for several years, but we loved the idea of getting all of our friends and family together in the city where we met. A friend suggested we check out the library and we fell in love with it right away! It was the perfect mix of traditional and unique. The library became the inspiration for the vibe of the wedding – minimalist and elegant.
Tell us about your clothing choices.
I found my dress pretty early on in the planning process and only ended up trying on five gowns before buying it. I’ve been a dancer all my life and my dress really brought out my inner ballerina! Spencer’s shopping experience was similarly painless – he tried on one suit at J.Crew and bought it!
What was the most important to you both while planning?
We chose to splurge on our photos! We knew we wanted to travel for our engagement session so we purposely picked photographers who were willing to come with us. We knew the Ganeys were the right fit for us the first time we talked to them – we clicked right away! To balance out our budget, we decided to skip a live band and instead had one of our mutual friends from college DJ – it was so fun to have him run down to the dance floor every once in a while!
Favorite part of the day? (if you had to choose!)
Too many to count! The first look was a really wonderful way to get over the butterflies of the day, and allowed us to really be present with each other and our guests the rest of the day.
Maybe one of the most memorable moments of the night was actually arriving at the after party – after cleaning up at the venue, we were the last ones to make it to the bar and received a greeting fit for kings when we walked in the door! Completely unplanned but a perfect way to end the night.
Tell us about your wedding details!
Fivefork Farms is a sustainably grown flower farm near Worcester, MA, where I went to medical school. I spent years buying their flowers at farmers’ markets on the weekends and was thrilled when I learned that they also did weddings! The flowers came out exactly as I imagined. Instead of a wedding cake, we had mini donuts from our favorite local donut shop. I made our centerpieces. As a nod to the library venue, I made paper flowers out of our favorite books – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Kerry) and Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges (Spencer).I wrapped a piece of the sleeve of my mom’s wedding gown around the stems of my bouquet and carried the purse that my sister used at her wedding. Spencer wore his grandfather’s Allen Edmonds shoes – they are ideal for dancing!
What did you do for favors?
Nothing! We donated what we would have spent on favors to the Access Fund, a charity close to both of our hearts as it helps maintain public lands for climbing throughout the country.
Do you have any advice for couples planning their wedding now?
Communicate early and often! There are so many decisions to make during the wedding planning process that it’s key to maintain your perspective about the aspects of your wedding that are most important to you so you don’t sweat the small stuff. And have fun!
