Today we are sharing a classical New England celebration featuring sailors knots, a harbor wedding & stunning blue color palette. With a vision from the beginning, Sally & Jimmy’s special day came together beautifully. Elegant & simple, this day highlighted a true Cape Cod wedding in the summertime!
How did you meet?
“We met the first night of freshman year of college at Bentley University. Jimmy was the first guy I met at Bentley. We had a freshmen mixer on the quad, and he came up to me and my friends and invited us to a football party. We became best friends, and started dating a couple months later!”
“Jimmy & Sally were married on the most perfect August day at the iconic Wychmere Beach Club in Harwich, MA. The day was in every way classical New England — from the sailor’s knots on the dinner tables, to the vintage Jeep parked outside of the venue. Sally wore the most gorgeous dress, complete with the sweetest box detail. The groomsmen wore navy and the bridesmaids wore a powder blue, both accentuating the surrounding coastal tones of this adorable beach town. The day was filled with lots of laughter and love as these two said “I do” surrounded by their closest family and friends.” – Lindsay Connors Photography
What is your proposal story?
“We got engaged on his parents boat! Since we have a lot of his family around, we never took the boat out by ourselves. Jimmy didn’t want me to be suspicious, so he came up with a plan. He works for his dad in construction, so he had his dad ask him to take the boat out to take a picture of one of their job sites from the water. Jimmy asked if I wanted to come with, and luckily I said yes! He was planning to propose once we got the boat out a little further on the water, but could barely wait for us to get off the dock! We enjoyed the moment with just the two of us for awhile, and called our friends and family. When we got back to the house I was surprised to see that he had coordinated both of my parents flying in! We had the best surprise engagement party with all our friends and family!”
What did you do for favors?
“We created koozies using our nautical flag monogram which was a symbol that we used on all of our wedding signage including our invitations, welcome sign, and programs!”
Tell us about your attire choices.
“I was all over the map with my dress choice, but ended up with a classic short sleeve, tight fitting dress! My dress actually came without sleeves or a bow, but I ended up getting extra fabric from the manufacturer, and a bow from a different designer, and having the seamstress alter the dress! For the boys we knew that we wanted them in navy tuxes from the beginning! We felt like it just fit the harbor/nautical theme well!”
Tell us about your wedding flowers.
“We chose hydrangeas to stay with the theme of classic cape cod!”
Please describe any DIY, handmade, or personal details.
“Since I am from Wisconsin, we took a few pictures where Jimmy put on a cheesehead bowtie that I brought back from home.”
Tell us a little a bit about your wedding
“I knew I wanted a true Cape Cod wedding since we live down here full time, and I wanted all of my family who live elsewhere to see what we love so much about the Cape! I envisioned a Harbor wedding with navy and light blue, and Wychmere blew my expectations out of the water!”
What were your favorite parts of the day? “From Sally: After pictures our wedding coordinator from the venue took us aside into a private room, where she had drinks and a plate with one of each of our hors d’oeuvres! It was just the two of us, and it was such a nice break from the craziness of the day. We got to enjoy the food we chose, as well as each other’s company. It was an awesome way to start the night, and one of my favorite parts! From Jimmy: I have two favorite moments. The first was seeing Sally walk down the aisle. It was such a surreal moment that I had waited so long for. The second was dancing with all of our friends and family! We couldn’t have had a better dance party!”
Did you include any family heirlooms or special traditions?
“I wore my sisters veil, and a bracelet that was passed down to me from my mom!”
Tell us about your wedding cake.
“We chose to do a s’mores dessert instead of a huge cake, but we did have a small cake for the ceremonial cutting of the cake. It looked like an elegant yet simple buttercream frosting cake on the outside, but was our favorite funfetti on the inside!”
What was the most important to the two of you while planning? Was there anything that you chose to splurge on or skip? “Definitely the venue and the band! We both come from big families, and have a lot of mutual friends from college, so we knew that we wanted to make the night a fun dance party! We chose to skip some of the extras like a videographer and upgraded linens so that we could have a larger wedding!”
Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?
“I would just say don’t sweat the small stuff. In the grand scheme of things you always hope that your day goes flawlessly, but you won’t remember the small mishaps in a couple years! Also, take moments here and there on the day of to slow down, take a step back, and soak in the day! It goes so quickly after so much planning and hard work.”
