Describe a hurdle you had to overcome in your relationship or during your wedding planning.

Having dated for 10 years before our wedding and starting our relationship at 20 & 21 years old, there were many hurdles and learning lessons we overcame together. One of our first hurdles was navigating my semester studying abroad in Wales during College. We were half way around the world in a completely opposite time zone but we found ways to stay connected and prioritize communication despite the distance. Our birthdays are a few days apart, so Francisco visited during our birthday month and we explored Wales, Paris and Barcelona together. The distance definitely made our love grow stronger and that year became one of our most cherished birthday trips to date.

Any special ways you incorporated your family or family history into your wedding day?

We are both first generation Mexican American and very proud of our roots. From the start of our wedding planning journey, a destination wedding in Mexico was always on our radar and the more research we did the more it made sense. We are so happy with our decision to bring our family and friends together in Mexico to celebrate our love and honor our roots in such an authentic way.

It was really important for us to incorporate our family into our wedding day. Our parents accompanied us down the aisle, our siblings were part of our bridal party as groomsmen and as godparents. We had a traditional Catholic ceremony in the chapel of our beautiful venue and were also able to incorporate our grandparents into our ceremony.

We both grew up close to our grandparents and we each only have one grandparent with us today. Instead of having a traditional set of godparents to bless our wedding bands, we asked each of our grandparents to present our rings to us. My grandfather presented me with Francisco’s wedding band, and his grandmother presented Francisco with mine. It was so special to have them by our sides on this special occasion.

What part of your wedding day was/is most important to you?

One of the moments I treasure the most looking back at our big day was our first look and private vows. This originally wasn’t part of our vision, but because we had an evening wedding our planner encouraged us to consider this as it would allow us to participate in the cocktail hour with our guests and take our family formal photos prior to the ceremony. Never did we imagine how special this experience would be.

While enjoying cocktail hour with our guests was a blast, being able to experience a moment in private amidst the chaos of the day was absolutely incredible. I’ll never forget the look in Francisco’s eyes as he turned to see me for the first time. I’ll never forget the butterflies in my stomach as he held my hands and brought them close. And I’ll never forget the genuine and loving tone in his voice as he read his personalized vows. I couldn’t have asked for a more special moment with my husband to be on our big day.

What is your favorite thing about each other?

My favorite thing about Francisco is his calm and easygoing nature. As someone who is constantly planning out her days and living in routine, Francisco’s relaxed nature reminds me to slow down and enjoy the moment we’re in.

My favorite thing about Jackie is that she truly works hard to be the best version of herself everyday. Seeing the effort she puts in motivates me to become better myself.

What was your favorite part about planning your wedding?

My favorite part about planning our wedding was seeing everything come together on the big day. We traveled to Guadalajara to meet our planner Marisol, and the broader planning team that makes up Jenny Diaz Eventos 6 months before our big day. During this visit we scouted our venue, decided on the tables, chairs, color schemes, and design our place settings down to the silverwear and napkin color. We also had a delicious our food tasting with the chef. Finally watching each detail, from the flowers and decorations to the music and menu, fall into place was so exciting. Seeing all these efforts come together on the wedding day was magical and unforgettable.

If you had one piece of advice for other couples, what would it be?

Create the day of your dreams, not anyone else’s. While loved ones will have opinions, suggestions and preferences of their own, stay true to your own desires.
