Backyard Garden Wedding

In a delightful twist of spontaneity, Tom and Hannah orchestrated a surprise backyard garden wedding that left their loved ones in awe and their hearts brimming with joy. Opting for an intimate gathering of around 70 guests, they chose the idyllic setting of Hannah’s parents’ property to host their special day.

How did you meet?

We had each other on Snapchat and Instagram, one day after work I messaged him asking what he was doing. He replied not much babe, you? I replied and said don’t call me babe, can I come over? I went over to his house, watched a movie, ate two minute noodles and went back every day the following week. It’s not the most romantic story but we were just little 19 year olds!

What is your proposal story?

Tom proposed to me at a beautiful restaurant in Bali. I had some inkling that it was going to happen – like my aunty Deb telling me deeeep into my soul to have the best trip away and the fact that Tom want to buy a tripod for our trip. He did throw me off the scent a bit when I was getting my nails done on one of our first days away and I asked if I should get pale pink, or green tips. Tom said green tips and I thought to myself there’s no way he will propose while I have these nails! On our scooter ride to the restaurant a week later and I had strange feeling that something was going to happen though – he hadn’t said anything that would make me think so but this weird feeling just came over me. Just before the sun set Tom suggested we get a photo in front of our table. I of course said I would set up our phone to take it as I do this for work every day. He was very persistent that he wanted to be the one to set it up (as he was setting it up for video not photo). You can see in the video the moment I see something in his hand. I remember thinking it was a joke and there was no way it was happening. I think I blacked out for most of it, all I can remember Tom saying is “you’ve been waiting for this for so long”. I couldn’t eat dinner afterwards because I was in shock.

Tell us about your vision for your wedding design + attire?

We had looked at quite a few different avenues for our wedding – a local winery, something interstate, with immediate family overseas, something at home. Everything was either taking us over budget or just wasn’t feeling like the right choice. We decided that the most fun, stress free & cheaper option would be to have a surprise wedding. We invited everyone to our engagement party held at my parents house, and after everyone’s arrival we announced we would be getting married. This decision was the best we could have made for us as a couple – it took so much stress out of the planning process and just ended up being a big, fun party with our favourite people.

The dress code for our wedding was formal, with Summer Sorbet colours. I knew that I wanted a silk style of dress and with staying on our stress-free theme, I decided to look online. I found my dress on Shona Joy, ordered it and the day that it arrived I knew it was the one. I also found a super cute mini dress from reformation that I wore as my “engagement party” dress & that I later changed into once the real party kicked off. I tapped into the Summer Sorbet dress code with my pale blue Loeffler Randall heels.

Tom knew he wanted a classic tuxedo for the wedding. After wearing a striped Country Road knit he changed into his Mickey Blue suit.

Tom & Hannah decided to spring a surprise wedding on their loved ones, setting the stage for an intimate gathering of around 70 guests. At Hannah’s parents’ picturesque property, the ambiance was infused with a relaxed energy, brimming with candid moments. Picture-perfect sun umbrellas, mouthwatering paella, and refreshing cocktails set the scene for an unforgettable day of love and laughter. -Katrina Menjivar of Redbook Studios

Most important and favorite moments of the day?

We knew that we wanted our wedding planning to be as stress free as possible. We’re two very laid back people and knew that the most important part of our day was our actual ceremony in front of our loved ones.

We did decide to splurge a bit more on our photography and videography by the amazing Redbook Studios, as well as my Louise Jean wedding bands.

We loved the moment we told all of our guests that we would actually be getting married – everyone’s faces and reactions were just the best.
I also had my Poppy meet me halfway down the aisle to help walk me down which was really special.
We also said our vows privately to each other later in the evening, something we will always cherish.

My parents have a beautiful garden so we picked a lot of the flowers ourselves. I also found a local lady on marketplace that grew and picked all of her own flowers so we bought a couple of buckets from her.
The night before the wedding my sister & her boyfriend arranged the baskets that we had at the end of the aisle.
