Nestled in the heart of DFW, Joy and Kevin’s colorful estate affair at the prestigious Olana Venue was nothing short of stunning. The grand estate, with its timeless elegance and captivating beauty, provided the perfect backdrop for their exchange of vows and declaration of love.
How did you both meet?
Kevin and I met in college at UT Austin back in 2012. We actually first met at our on-campus dining hall haha. I thought he was the funniest, most charming person ever and the rest is history.
Proposal story?
We were in Colorado Springs for a month back in 2021 because I was doing an away rotation for medical school there. We went on a beautiful sunset hike after I got back from the hospital (as we had been regularly doing) and he just dropped down on one knee and popped the question!! Then my best friends (who had been hiding in the bushes nearby with our two dogs) sprung out and surprised me too (that’s when the waterworks really started lol).
I had known the proposal was going to happen sometime that year but I had ZERO idea Kevin had been planning a whole proposal and reception party behind my back. Around 50 of our closest friends flew out to Colorado to be there for the after-proposal party and it was one of the most special moments of my life.
What was your wedding vision and attire choices?
The moment I visited The Olana, I just knew it was the perfect venue. It was everything I had ever pictured for my wedding. I wanted the wedding to be elegant with lots of florals and overall just have a super romantic atmosphere.
I wanted a very elegant, clean and romantic look and went for formal tuxes for the men and simple clean lines (no beading or lace) for my own dress. I went with shades of green for my bridesmaids for a nice garden vibe.
Most important part of the day and favorite memories?
Our utmost priority for our wedding was to make sure our guests had a good time. We wanted to them to have activities to do (we rented a photobooth and also a phone for them to leave voicemails on instead of signing a guestbook) and also prioritized the dance party. We did end up skipping a videographer which in hindsight we do kind of regret. The day was still perfect regardless though.
Some of my favorite moments: just hanging out with my bridesmaids before the wedding ceremony, chatting with my dad before the ceremony, our friend Tony singing during our ceremony, exchanging our vows, the dance party…I mean I could go on and on. Everything was amazing
Tell us about your design and favors.
I wanted full, lush, romantic flowers and Alba Dahlia really nailed it. I gave Alba Dahlia some color suggestions but for the most part, let Rachel do her creative magic. My flowers were absolutely gorgeous. My only specific request really was to incorporate some white orchids into my bouquet which I loved so much.
I wanted a simple but elegant wedding cake look to match the rest of the atmosphere and ended up asking for an orchid design down the side of the cake. Absolutely loved how it ended up!!
We gave out koozies that had a hand-drawn design by me on it and also little apple scented soaps in a chinese character that signifies happiness and celebration of marriage.
Any advice for couples planning?
It can be a really stressful time obviously but trust me everything will be OKAY! Don’t sweat the small stuff. It will perfect regardless and it will truly be the best day ever!
