The cutest engagement session with Kathryn and Matt, a cool car, and their collie …
How did you two meet? What were your first impressions of one another?
We were actually set up on a blind date! Kathryn had just started a new job when her co worker suggested she join her and her boyfriend for dinner. At the same time, the boyfriend asked his single friend on their soccer team to also join.
We barely spoke to each other on the first date- the energy was so loud! But Matt somehow managed to ask Kathryn for her number later that day and the rest easily followed.
When asked, Matt says he noticed my eyes first, and I couldn’t get over his smile!
Tell us a funny story relating to your wedding day or relationship!
We had a huge fight over directions hours before we got engaged!
On a trip to Italy, we tried hiking a popular path and at the end of the trail, started arguing about which direction to take to get back to the hotel. We’re both a bit stubborn and refused to admit the other was right! Something important to note: Kathryn is very directionally challenged!
This led to us eventually taking Kathryn’s route, because Matt was willing to let me try!
Of course I was wrong. What was supposed to be a 40 minute walk back to the hotel turned into a 5 hour uphill walk and hiking down the cliff sides of Positano.
We of course arrived 4 hours late, still arguing, and barely had time to change for dinner. But when we ran out the door 30-minutes later, Matt suggested we take another 100 steps down to the beach to take a photo. At this moment, with wobbly knees and weak ankles, Kathryn knew he was going to propose. There would be no other reason to take another 100 steps down a cliff!
Describe a hurdle you had to overcome in your relationship or during your wedding planning.
We were in our early 20s when we first started dating and have been together for 10 years. The biggest hurdle we’ve overcome is growing up together while facing our changing priorities, lives, and selves. Who we were at 22 is not who we are at 32, but we can both say we supported each other through these changes while also allowing ourselves to grow authentically into who we are today.
Any special ways you incorporated your family or family history into your wedding day?
Matt lost his dad 7 years ago and it was important to us to incorporate him into our wedding. When creating our wedding bands, Matt’s mom gifted us his Dad’s wedding ring and Kathryn’s mom gifted us her heirloom gold. We were able to melt down these pieces to create our own, one-of-a-kind wedding bands forged from the love of generations previous. It’s something we will cherish forever.
What part of your wedding day was/is most important to you?
The vows. We have decided to do both private vows just for us two, as well as ceremony vows for our family and guests. A public expression of love is so important to us but those private intimate moments are something we don’t want to lose in the day either.
What is your favorite thing about each other?
Matt says Kathy’s selflessness. Kathy loves how much Matt values family first. And how willing he is to try girly experiences to make me
Happy!
If you had one piece of advice for other couples, what would it be?
Learn to grow together but also as individuals.
What is the most honest thing you can say about love?
Its perfectly unpredictable.
